for those few of you who know Canada's Next Top Model existed, and the even fewer who actually watched it, you know that last night it came to a conclusion. Andrea, a 19 year old from Whitby, won the 100,000$ modelling contract and a photoshoot with a Canadian fashion magazine.
i'd only watched the very first and very last episodes, none in between. i never thought any of the girls were very attractive, and thought the show was just a cheap rip off of America's Next Top Model, and i can't stand that show either. what i mainly dislike about the show and all its spin-offs is that i get into the mentality of picking every girl on the show apart, solely based on how i think they will fit into the modelling industry. i find myself yelling "BUT SHE'S SO UGLY" at the television, and i don't think that's the greatest way to spend my evening.
in the first episode (see first picture above) when andrea was asked why she wanted to be Canada's Next Top Model, she said it was because she wanted to prove to everyone who ever told her she was ugly that she was beautiful. meanwhile, from what i could tell, she had no self-esteem, no style, no ANYTHING. this isn't to say that all models have great self-esteem, but most of them carry themselves with confidence and attitude, not whiny crying pity-me fests. and for a show like this, where the viewers are asked to make character AND talent judgements, it seems like we're rewarding young women for being gawky and awkward and whinning about it.
my main issues with this show, aside from low production values, was the racist undertones that were in last night's episode. in the first episode one of the black contestants was chastised very harshly by the host, because she WALKED AROUND WITHOUT HER TOP ON in the back of a changeroom where the models were changing for their photoshoots. models do this ALL the time in the real modelling world and i thought it was realistic for once. but what a surprise! she gets chastized for doing something a model would actually do. it's not disrespectful when you have to get changed quickly and when you show you're comfortable with nudity, because 99% of high fashion editorial/runway models show their breasts at one point to a photographer or to fellow models.
last night, the host called Sisi, who is Asian and the ONLY non-white contestant left, was called an "exotic" beauty. today in the toronto star, each of the three final contestants is labelled as "the slim Andrea... spicy Sisi, 24, and sweet Alanna, 19." what a surprise that the "slim" and "sweet" models are white, while the "spicy" and "exotic" one is Asian. sure, she was a live wire and more energetic than the other girls, but that doesn't necessarily mean she should be described with the same characteristics that could describe a dish of food!
how about a bunch of pictures so you guys can make your own judgements about who would
